What is Psoriasis?

According to the National Psoriasis Foundation: Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, that causes raised, red, scaly patches to appear on the skin. According to the Australian Government’s site Health Direct Australia website; psoriasis is a long-term skin condition, that can also affect joints. There are several different types of psoriasis.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition, in which the person’s own immune system attacks their own body. In psoriasis, the skin cells in the affected areas tend to replicate about 10 times faster than normal rate. Generally speaking, the skin cells in unaffected skin will take 28-30 days for a normal cycle. However in psoriasis affected skin, this has been speeded up to 2-3 days and the growing / replicating cells tend to stack on top of each other. This causes an over crowding of cells, which in turn leads to perforation in the skin and the white scaly skin associated with psoriasis.
